Process and Tips:
Registering as a Singer
It is necessary for all individual participating singers to Register. Just fill in the Registration Form provided (at least the essential fields). On receiving your registration details, ELM will acknowledge your registration, send you important updates as required, create a Dropbox folder into which you can submit a video file(s) of your recorded performance of your part(s) and acknowledge you by name in the music movie credits.
Practicing your part(s)
Choose the practice music most suitable for your voice and singing experience and skill. Practice music has been tailored for three levels of competency: SIMPLE MELODY, SIMPLE HARMONY and RICH HARMONY. The practice music is provided in four forms, simple lyrics, sheet music, audio and video (that combines animated sheet music with audio practice music, complete with Krispin, our Musical Director, conducting you). Use whatever practice medium you find works for you. When practicing, you may wish to skip the first 20 bars/measures, which comprise 4 click track bars/measures (NOT part of the song - used by ELM to synchronise your videos you submit) and a 16 bar/measure introduction (i.e. fast forward to about 40 seconds into the audio or video).
Video Recording your part(s)
After you've learnt and practiced the song and are ready to video record your performance, it's time to follow the following steps:
1. Find a relatively quiet place to record and set up your equipment. You will need some means of playing and listening to the relevant practice audio or video through at least one earbud or headphone (we want you to record ONLY your singing - NOT the practice music you listen to and follow).
You may perform individually or buddy-up by using cable splitters and multiple earphones (i.e. a group of 4 singers can be 'wired up' by sharing 2 sets of earphones (one earbud each) connected to a standard 3.5mm stereo socket via a single splitter and male/female cable).
2. As you listen to the practice music, your equipment needs to also be able to record video and audio of yourself singing. Equipment may range from PCs/Macs, tablets, smartphones, mp3 players, video cameras, webcams etc. The video recording equipment will need to produce a video file of any common format (e.g. mov, mp4 etc) at 640 x 480 resolution or better.
Make sure there is adequate lighting for video recording. Set your video/camera/recorder to frame your upper torso and head. A light source at 10 or 2 o'clock in front of you works best. The more tidy and plain the background, the better!... and be happy... smile.
The sequence of actions for recording is as follows:
a) Start the video camera/recorder.
b) Start playing the practice music from the very beginning - through speakers for the first 3 bars (this allows the click track to be recorded by the recording device as an audio signature for synchronising the videos).
c) Plug your ear/headphones in and disable the speakers during the 4th bar.
d) Start singing after the 16 bar introduction by flute and piano.
e) Hold still for a couple of seconds at the end of the song and keep smiling.
f) Turn off the video camera/recorder.
g) Turn off the practice music player.
h) Store the video file.
Repeat this sequence for as many 'takes' it takes and for as many 'song parts' you'd like to perform. Don't be overly concerned about how your voice, alone and without backing, may sound. Once your recording is merged with many other voices and with instrument accompaniment, you'll be amazed at how good the end result will sound!
Submitting your video(s)
Copy and paste the video file(s) you wish to submit to ELM into the Dropbox folder allocated to you as a Registered Singer (allocation of drop box folders will be commenced on August 17). The deadline for submitting videos is COB 1st Oct 2014.
