A journey that started back in 2015 came to a wonderfully satisfying conclusion at the 2016 Stretch Festival, with the exhibit of the interactive MyCut art installation.
Synchronised renditions of Eric Bogle's inspirational song, Shelter, were loaded into a computerised video editing application that emulated the role of a video editor. Festival goers were able to create a unique compilation of the song by selecting, from a total of some 40 video/audio tracks, those tracks they thought may mix well together. Sometimes their creative insight would be rewarded by a mix that worked remarkably well. At other times, the mix was less compatible. No problem! drop some out, add some in, and run it again. It was a great pleasure to witness the joy and amazement of Festival patrons, especially those who were contributing artists, as they dynamically experimented with different mixes and viewed the compilations of their creation. All that remains to be done, is to:
Elm wishes to take this opportunity to thank its sponsors and volunteers, for the generous support that made this project possible and congratulate the contributing performers for their artistry. Team Elm

The original deadline for submissions of end March 2016 has been relaxed to coincide with the last day of the Fairbridge Festival, namely; the 17th April. A good deal has occurred since our last news item:
Love and live Team Elm Rather than a movie, the product being delivered by the 'Shelter - Jam with Eric Bogle' Project is to be a dynamic multi-track audiovisual art installation. This computer application, to be called MyCut, will be exhibited at appropriate festivals, commencing with the Mandurah Stretch Festival during late April - early May 2016. A working document, in the form of a PowerPoint presentation, has been posted on our website. It is a passive simulation of dialogue screens for the Front-end of the proposed computer application. More detail will be added to this document, and others, as the design progresses. Team Elm It is with considerable delight and relief, we announce the official launch of the 'Shelter - Jam with Eric Bogle' Project. This exciting collaboration between Eric Bogle and Elm promises to be a significant event. Participants have the opportunity to reinforce Eric's hopes and aspirations for an inclusive, tolerant and compassionate Nation. Instrumentalists and singers alike may start practicing and recording your rendition of this wonderful song. We have provided state of the art music resources for your ease of use and you are free to improvise in any genre or follow our arrangement for Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass, Piano and Oboe (or any other compatible instrument). You have until the end of March 2016 to submit your video rendition. Locals have a slightly extended deadline of 17th April 2016, especially those attending the 2016 Fairbridge Festival where we will be facilitating jamming sessions and video recording in the world-class John Butler Studio. This stage of the Project will conclude with the exhibiting of a novel computerised art installation at the Mandurah Stretch Festival where each visitor will be invited to play the role of a film editor by directing the dynamic compilation of a music movie. The top three compilations will be uploaded to the Internet, together with appropriate acknowledgement, copyright and privacy statements. We heartily thank the main sponsors of this event, namely; the City of Mandurah and the Mandurah Muscateers. Without their kind support, we would not have the resources to deliver such an ambitious community project. Get involved and make a difference! Team Elm Click here to listen to the podcast. Exciting times! The City of Mandurah has approved a financial grant to Elm. This grant will provide the resources needed to complete the Shelter 'Jam with Eric Bogle' community project, which will deliver a novel art installation as a part of the April-May 2016 Stretch Festival. See more! Thanks to this grant, and the kind donation of equipment by the Mandurah Muscateers, musicians and singers across the breadth of Australia have an opportunity to contribute their interpretation of this inspiring song during the official practice and record stage commencing on the 18th January and concluding at the end of March 2016. Add your weight behind Eric's hopes and aspirations for this place we call home. Love and live Team Elm Eric Bogle and Each Living Moment (Elm) have initiated a collaborative project to perform Eric's stirring song 'Shelter' as a community based virtual choir. The DVD recorded performance of 'Shelter' by Eric, his touring partner John Munro and band, at the Stonyfell Winery in South Australia, forms the foundation of the project. Singers and instrumentalists from around the world are invited to team up as an online community to sing or play along with Eric, John and the band. See computer generated demo video. Register as a singer or musician! Love and live Team Elm The community health and development contributions made by ELM was recognised by the city of Mandurah at the Australia Day celebrations last week. To performing ELM members, we thank you for your wonderful efforts during 2014 that culminated with the launch of your 'Wonderful Life!' music movie.
Nationally, the movie was launched by way of a premiere showing at the National 'Arts&Edges Conference. Our representative at the conference, Guy Boyce (General Manager, Mandurah Performing Arts Centre) reported "The screening went very well with a full house of 700 people in the Goldfields Arts Centre auditorium. ...the audience watched it intently and it got a very generous applause..." Internationally, the launch involved the simultaneous uploading of the movie onto the Internet. As at the end of 2014, I'm happy to report that the movie has been viewed by more than 1000 internet visitors! Feedback included: "if there's anything more guaranteed to lift up your spirits than a joyous collection of human voices lifted up in song, then I don't know about it......truly, music feeds the soul.... well done to all involved." Eric Bogle, internationally recognised singer/songwriter; "I loved watching and listening to this - it gave me goosebumps... CCS are proud to have been part of this endeavour" Anita Graham, President, Churchlands Choral Society; "Wonderful work, beautiful Bold Park children being children" Parent, Bold Park Community School; "The movie was viewed by some 2000 people (students, parents, staff of all three schools and invited dignitaries) at the Scotch College speech Night... the screening was the highlight of the night... we are keen to be involved in future ELM productions" paraphrased verbal feedback received from Jenny Sullivan, Music Teacher. Love and live Walter Bennett Director ELM Production of Wonderful Life!, the movie, was achieved three days before scheduled to be screened at the National Arts&Edges conference on Sunday 19th Oct in Kalgoolie. We invite you to take part in this launch by viewing the movie on the Internet as conference delegates witness the launch in the main auditorium, commencing at 11:45 a.m. AWST (UTC+8hrs). A pre-prepared introduction for the launch says it all: "The song you're about to experience is the work of over 250 enthusiastic singers and instrumentalists who were invited to perform the piece from anywhere in the world. Input ranged from individuals performing in front of a webcam at home or school to the combined voices of massed choirs performing on stage at a major Regional concert. With the support of sponsors, particularly Lotterywest and VoiceMoves, this community health project was conceived and conducted by Each Living Moment, a not for profit organisation. ELM, as it is known, was founded in 2012 by two creative neighbours who share both a common interest and challenge, namely; verse and rhyme and living with Parkinson's. They individually make the most of each moment of life by choosing to adopt positive beliefs and attitudes. Their objective for ELM is to encourage others to do likewise - by singing uplifting songs - wherever they may live. The verse and chorus lines of Wonderful Life! reflect the level of joy and freedom experienced during childhood by those of similar vintage to the founders of ELM. In the song's bridge, the authors promote the on-going essential need for self-directed play in child development. As you experience this screening today, the ELM team back in South Yunderup will be simultaneously uploading the movie to the Internet, making this a worldwide launch event (spread the word to share this viewing experience with family and friends). ELM lives to serve by GIVING LIGHT, LIFTING SPIRIT, OFFERING HOPE." |
